Did you know that children (and adults!) feel happier, more loved and more connected to others in their lives when they practice gratitude regularly? Today I am sharing writing and conversation prompts to help your child express appreciation and cultivate positive emotions. What other prompts would you add to the list?
In wellness, we learned about Veterans Day. This began with a history of the holiday. We learned:
In wellness, we read The Color Monster by Anna Llenas. One day, Color Monster wakes up feeling very confused. His emotions are all over the place; he feels angry, happy, calm, sad and scared all at once! To help him, a little girl shows him what each feeling means through color. As this adorable monster learns to sort and define his mixed up emotions, he gains self-awareness and peace as a result. We followed up with a partner project incorporating the four colors - blue, green, yellow and red - and Lego building blocks. Check out their creations... and the students working together. Students learn and practice mindfulness in wellness classes. One practice we use most often is referred to as "core practice." It begins with a chime. We focus on the sound until we can hear it no longer. From there we focus on our breathing, taking deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. The chime sounds again to end the practice. I have found that after these mindful moments students are more focused and engaged in their learning. I will be sharing mindful resources in future posts, including practices you can do with your child at home.
In wellness we are exploring the issue of climate change. This began with a share, what would you be willing to give up if it would reduce global warming? I was impressed by their responses, which ranged from drying clothes outside instead of in a dryer to eating less meat. In the next two classes we will use the KWL model - what we Know, what we Want to know and what we Learned - to delve further into the topic.
